Four years ago, a visit to a refugee camp propelled us to do something to help. We decided to fund raise to help.

A workshop on Service Learning started us on a path of reflection on our actions regarding the refugee crisis. What were teacher-led action became students initiated and organized actions that were more authentic and academically more meaningful. A bake sale became a cooking class as well as a selling experience (measuring, following recipes, estimating costs, deciding on prices, advertising…).

A step outside the school walls, led to a discovery of community assets that helped students practice their French in a real situation.

During this workshop, we will be briefly sharing with you our experiences and help you guide your
students to define needs and assets in your communities and be involved in authentic learning
experiences where math, languages, arts, talents, skills are all put together for a purpose.
